Cowabunga Dude
Get your 1980s nostalgia fix with Netflix’s TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge. That’s right, Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael and Michelangelo are back in this 80s-style arcade title. Enjoy the colorful 2d graphics as you bust out your ninja skills on classic TMNT enemies. The turtles, their friend April, and master Splinter are watching the news when Bebop interrupts the broadcast and states that the Foot is back and taking over the Statue of Liberty.
Players start by choosing one of six characters—Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, Donatello, Splinter, or April. Each character has one to three stars for speed, range and power attributes, so I recommend choosing the character with the build that best fits your play style. The more stars a character has for an attribute, the better. For example, Raphael has just one star for range but deals extra damage thanks to having full stars in power while Leonardo is evenly balanced with all attributes at two stars.
Gameplay is fairly straightforward. On the left of the screen, towards the bottom, you’ll see a classic directional pad which is how you control your character’s movement. To the right of the d-pad are buttons for evading and attacking enemies. Tap the green button with the diagonal arrow to perform an aerial attack. There’s also a standard melee attack button and a super attack button. Use your super attacks wisely, however, since there is a cooldown period. Additionally, use the jump and backflip buttons to evade enemy attacks.
Talk About Turtle Power
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is reminiscent of old-school TMNT arcade titles from the 80s and 90s. Since it is an arcade-style game, the gameplay is relatively simple and focuses primarily on combat. Players battle foot soldiers, rats, mousers and more as they traverse the game’s various levels. The game’s fast-paced combat offers an engaging challenge. Break out your ninja moves and karate kick your way through hordes of enemies as you nod along to the game’s upbeat retro soundtrack. Low on life? Just find a take-out pizza box and snack on its contents to replenish your health. If you are looking for a complex game with various activities to discover, TMNT:Shedder’s Revenge isn’t for you. However, for fans of fighting, adventure and arcade titles, this nostalgic little beauty is a perfect way to pass some time.
The game features a story mode and an arcade mode. Story mode allows you to progress through the game as you usually would and offers three difficulty levels—Chill, Okay and Gnarly. Having difficulty options is a nice touch that makes the game enjoyable for hardcore arcade gamers as well as newcomers to the genre. Arcade mode pays homage to 1980’s arcades. Game progress doesn’t save so once you’re dead, you have to start over.
TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is based on the 1987 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. It features familiar environments like the Channel six station building, the Crystal Palace Mall and the Central Park Zoo. The game also features a few levels where players must stay in motion on a skateboard, adding a bit of variety to the gameplay.
A Totally Turtle-tastic Time
As with Netflix’s other game titles, there are no annoying paywalls or in-app purchases, so you can enjoy the entire game as long as you have a Netflix account. An excellent arcade action title, TMNT: Shedder’s Revenge, will bring back memories of Saturdays spent sitting around watching the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series. With charming retro graphics, quick, challenging combat and a sweet soundtrack, TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge is a must-play for fans of arcade titles. In the words of Michelangelo, this game is Cowabunga, dude!
