After less than three months of testing through Steam early access, The Art of War: Card Game is approaching its final stage of development. Developed by Brightdawn Entertainment, the game garnered the player base’s approval during this beta test, having 86% positive reviews. Currently, the game is available on all supported platforms: Steam, Itch.io, the Epic Marketplace, the AppStore and Google Play.
Two things set The Art of War: Card Game apart from the typical digital card game today. First, it is not a collectible card game. Instead of buying booster packs and growing your options that way, every card is immediately available from the start. This means that everyone playing the game has the same possibilities—all you have to rely on is your skill. Second, the game mechanics were consciously developed to make the rules simple and easy to learn. Anyone can pick it up and be ready to face other players after just two quick matches against the computer.
With the above in mind, the developers considered the possibility of a tabletop version, which they’re planning to release sometime soon. They already published a webpage for it on Gamefound where people can add the game to their Wishlist. The tabletop version is scheduled to release in the summer of 2023.
While The Art of War: Card Game stands on its own merits, the influence of Gwent is evident, and the creators don’t hide it. The author of the game said:
“The nostalgia of forever gone beta-Gwent inspired us to create our own game. We decided to recreate what we really loved in the old Gwent and improve other aspects that we didn’t like in other similar card games.”
