My Cat Club: Collect Kittens Review

Feline Superstardom

Flex your feline-photography skills and become a social media sensation in My Cat Club: Collect Kittens. This relaxing social media simulation game from developer PikPok features adorably 3D-rendered cats ready for their close-up. Play as Anna, an enthusiastic new cat mom, and take photos to impress the popular Cat Club community. Adopt, breed and nurture your feline companions to fulfill trending hashtags and suggestions made by your fellow Cat Club enthusiasts. With millions of beautifully illustratied designs, robust family trees and tons of unlockable furniture, you won’t want to miss this stellar cozy game.

Pick of the Litter

Upon opening My Cat Club: Collect Kittens, players will choose between three cats—Bella, Anchovy and Shadow. Each cat features a set of stats referred to as their family tree. Family trees include the cat’s temperament, appearance and corresponding hashtag attributes. Each cat also features two unlockable skills (at levels three and four) that boost your performance on social media. Your initial choice won’t matter too much, as you can easily obtain more cats with vastly different family trees later on.

After selecting your new fur baby, you’ll snap a quick pic and upload it to the in-game social media network. You’ll receive some welcoming feedback from the Cat Club community and begin the game’s story mode by entering the first Photo Series. Each Photo Series is divided into four chapters and requires players to use certain tags by choosing furniture and cats. Furniture tags can be found by tapping the green information icon on the furniture’s display. Ideally, you’ll want to choose furniture with high photo power and corresponding tags. This won’t be easy in the beginning, as you’ll have limited access to furniture and cats, but over time you’ll have plenty of options.

As you select furniture and cats, their corresponding hashtags will be checked off of your list of requirements. Additionally, after unlocking a cat’s skill, a blue bonus will appear above the corresponding hashtag. These skill bonuses act as powerful multipliers that drastically increase your overall score.

In Photo Series 1-1, your new kitty will meet Anna’s O.G. catfluencer, Boots. You’ll pose the pair in the most creative way possible by tapping a cat and selecting a favorite position. Feel free to exclude cats or furniture from the shot, as their omission won’t impact your score. After snapping the photo, you can activate any tag-specific boosts as the game calculates your score. You can also double the number of rewards earned for each photo by watching a quick ad. I recommend doing this, since it’s a quicker, easier way to upgrade furniture and achieve higher scores. Finally, members of the Cat Club will react to your photos, doling out praise for inspired shots or helpful hints for lackluster results.

Pretty soon, you’ll need more cats to satisfy your growing social media audience. Beginning with Photo Series 1-3, players can breed their own kittens after a thirty-minute cooldown. To create a kitten, tap the Breed tab and select two cats whose family trees you’d like to mix. Just like real-world biology, the parents will have dominant and recessive genes to take into account. With literally millions of combinations, the breeding mechanic can feel overwhelming. However, players will find that the process feels pretty straightforward and intuitive thanks to the simplified display. You’ll need to breed cats pretty regularly as you’ll encounter required hashtags for cats that you’ve yet to obtain, beginning with the second Photo Series.

Worth A Thousand Meows

If you’re hoping to fly through My Cat Club’s eight Photo Series, you’ll be disappointed. When my progression stalled around the third Photo Series, I grew frustrated. After all, I wanted more cats, more furniture, more social media followers! But after tempering my expectations and getting used to its slower pace, I soon settled into the game’s slow burn.

What My Cat Club: Collect Kittens lacks in depth of story or gameplay, it more than makes up for in vibes. The game’s core tenets of creativity and relaxation are on full display. Everything from the illustrative character designs to the Norah Jones-esque soundtrack make for the perfect cozy gaming experience. So, grab a cup of coffee and snuggle under a blanket—it’s time you photographed some kittens.
