Lost Light PVPVE, based on the recently released core title of almost the same name, is the cautiously -anticipated new title from NetEase, but is it any good?
It takes place in the “Exclusion Zone,” consisting of 4 maps. The game hands you the task of shooting enemies before they shoot you. Some of them are tougher than others. You can arm yourself to the teeth and prepare for an onslaught or go minimalist and use stealth tactics. This lends the title higher replayability than most iOS titles. You are given the choice of a plethora of weapons and mods your character can use. One thing players will definitely recognize is the PUBG-like closing circle that gets smaller and smaller over time.
Pay to Win?
Lost Light PVPVE tries to separate itself from the pack with a host of interesting features. Its loot system is very unique, with items of high value scattered across all four maps and divided into 7 types of loot: health and food items, armor and helmets, backpacks, weapons and modifications, ammo and grenades, and finally items that can only be sold in “Heidi’s Shop” LL’s version of the black market. And, yes, there are microtransactions, so you will compete against some players that have stacked characters. Unfortunately, getting smoked by guys that have purchased every gear and weapon upgrade available proves reliably abysmal.
Hands-on
During my playthrough I found the graphics very smooth and pleasing to the eye, looting was streamlined and user-friendly and movement was fluid. The only thing lacking was an effective control scheme. Lost Light has all of the controls you would expect in a AAA FPS, the problem is that’s a lot of controls for a touchscreen layout. So trying to aim while still moving, peeking around corners, and using items was extremely difficult using the touchscreen. However, if you have a gaming controller that you can connect and use it’s a very unique and fun game.
Online
The online support for multiplayer is mostly robust, but some infrequent lag mars an otherwise satisfying experience. You’ll find your experience online will closely match the quality of your internet connection, and how well the solid matchmaking system connects you to nearby players. Co-op features heavily in the game, but it’s a shame there’s no support for 48 players at once in the same room. Visually, LL is Impressive. The realistic presentation is carried across with great attention to detail. Additionally, there is no faulting the character animation on display. It’s a testament to the graphical prowess of the iOS system. The 3D world of Lost Light comes to life in a realistic way in NetEase’s mobile port, which is nice if you’re a fan of the genre.
