Kraino Origins Review

Kraino Origins Kraino Attacking A Rock Golem
Spread the love

Sweet Platforming Action

Looking for a mobile platformer that embodies the Halloween spirit? Then Kraino Origins may be for you. By solo developer Angel Dorantes who also goes by GameAtomic, this action platformer offers players an intense, nostalgic 8-bit platforming experience. But is it hardcore?

The game begins with a brief introduction to the story. Evil Dr. Bacula has been busy creating evil monsters and it’s up to our newly resurrected hero, Kraino, to defeat them. After the introduction, the game throws you right into the action. As Kraino, a scythe-wielding dapper skeleton adorned in purple armor and a matching top hat, you’ll traverse a burning town, battling beastly baddies and collecting coins.

Kraino Origins Battle in the Sewer

Kraino Origins doesn’t hold your hand. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not the most difficult action platformer out there, but it sure presents a challenge. You are going to die, probably a lot. But that’s part of the charm. The game is only eight levels, but each offers an enjoyable, challenging experience. Throughout the game, you’ll battle everything from gargoyles and rock golems to bouncing Frankenstein-esque heads. Learning enemy patterns is key to success, especially when it comes to boss fights. The evil ghost boss in the first level took me out quite a few times before I was able to defeat him. However, finally taking him down was euphoric.

It’s not just enemies that impede your progress. You’ll need to avoid obstacles such as fire, spikes and noxious steam rising from busted pipes. The real challenge is timing your movements and attacks so that enemies can’t knock you into obstacles or off ledges.

Ode to Super Nintendo

Kraino Origins pays homage to old-school Super Nintendo-era platformers. Adding to the nostalgia are the plus mode filters, which alter the game’s appearance. The 90’s Handheld filter superimposes a green hue over the screen, similar to how games looked on Gameboy. The Moonshine and SLS08 filters give the game an old-school feel. Additionally, the game’s second level takes place in the pixelated sewers paying subtle homage to the Super Mario Brothers games of old.

Kraino Origins Kraino on Moving Platform

Reminiscent of Castlevania, this horror-infused title also includes a plethora of secret areas to unlock. Smash your way through seemingly impenetrable walls and floors or strategically attack an enemy with the in-air attack to launch yourself to greater heights. Within these secret areas, you find soul fragments and magic sub-weapons. Collect enough soul fragments and an additional square will be added to your life bar. To start, you can only take a few hits before dying, so cherish every upgrade you get. Not only do the hidden pathways offer sweet rewards they are also incredibly fun to look for.

I’ll admit I was surprised by just how much I enjoyed Kraino Origins. There’s always a risk with platformers that the gameplay will feel repetitive. But this indie title never gets tiresome. Each level offers a refreshing challenge with new obstacles and interesting enemies. Yes, there are only eight levels, but each one is satisfying, both in length and overall execution. Kraino Origins does what many mobile platformers fail to do—it combines the best elements of the platformer genre without feeling like a cheap copy of Mario or Castlevania. If you enjoy a good platformer and a spooky aesthetic, then do yourself a favor and download Kraino Origins now.
