Trapped in a Nightmare
What’s worse than being trapped in a locked room? Being trapped in a spooky one! Race the clock as you tap your way through rooms, uncovering hidden items and solving puzzles. Stay too long, however, and you risk more than an eternity trapped.
Ghouls, Ghosts, and Ghastly Frights!
Escape Room Haunted Mystery, published by TTN Fun Games, boasts a hundred rooms in 50 levels that will surely challenge even the most experienced player. However, upon playing the game I discovered there were actually 60 levels. More fun for me!
Each level is different from the last and level length can vary. You can travel through multiple rooms in one level, then only have one or two in the next. Navigating between rooms is easy enough using the arrows on the bottom left and right of the screen. To access a locked room, you simply need to find the right key and match it to its door. After five levels, players will have to spend 100 coins to unlock the next one.
Escape Room Haunted Mystery is a “point and click” escape room game, although there’s no narrative aspect to it. Simply tap on an object to pick it up, interact or inspect it. The action you get depends on what the object is. Tapping on a puzzle will have it fit the screen, and as long as you’ve already interacted with the clue, allow you to attempt to solve it. Other puzzles require you to find pieces to finish them. Once you’ve done so, you’ll be prompted to complete the puzzle.
There are useful hints and skips throughout the levels, although they cost coins to use after level five. There are general hints, which cost 25 coins to use. These show you what you can interact with in a room. There are also puzzle-specific hints. After you discover a clue for a puzzle, you can attempt to solve it (so no brute-forcing your way through). A question mark will appear in the top right corner of a puzzle once you’ve discovered the clue, and you can pay another 25 coins to view it. I found this to be useful because I kept having to run between rooms to go back and look at the clue.
Lastly, there are the skip buttons. These only appear on puzzles that require you to find pieces to finish them. As they are more skill-based, the game offers players a way around them. Be warned though, these are more expensive than skips, at 50 coins total.
Compensation For Your Troubles
So how does one get coins? Thankfully, it’s pretty easy. Aside from a daily bonus that ranges anywhere between 100 and 250 coins, players earn 100 coins every time they finish a level under a certain time. I discovered that 18 minutes seems to be the sweet spot. Any more than that and you begin to lose coins. There’s also the option of replaying a level to earn more coins. Don’t expect anything new though. Everything from the locations of items to the puzzle answers is the same.
Players also have an option to buy coins. The highest amount you can buy is 20,000 coins for $49.99. Aside from buying coins, players can buy a pack to unlock all hints, puzzles and videos, and get rid of all ads. This would be nice for a dedicated player, as an ad plays every 6 minutes that you spend in a level.
The game has a definite Halloween theme going on, as it sports witches, vampires, ghouls and more. The soundtrack features an old organ and other spooky sound effects. It plays on a loop and is the only track in the whole game, so hope you enjoy it! There are a myriad of different art styles throughout the game, but all of them convey a cartoony and fun, spooky feel.
