Vendir: Plague of Lies: A Stellar Old-School RPG
An ancient prophecy, a corrupt king and old-school RPG gameplay await you in Vendir: Plague Of Lies. From the creators of Vampire’s Fall: Origins, Vendir is an intensely entertaining new role-playing title featuring retro graphics and compelling turn-based battles.
The game centers around the player character and their sister, Mellia, who together, according to an ancient prophecy, are destined to dethrone the evil King Elrik. After receiving a letter from your mother, the two of you embark on a dangerous quest to save the kingdom from Elrik and his plague of lies.
The game offers players several backgrounds to choose from, which affects your starting stats. For instance, selecting the performer’s background boosts your character’s charisma. The game features a vast level-up tree. Early-level abilities aren’t locked into a specific class, so players can try out a few different types of abilities. You can be a mage with some standard warrior abilities or a ranger with a few spells up your sleeve. However, once you progress far enough down a particular class’s path, you’ll be locked into that specialization.
Not Your Typical RPG Classic
Vendir: Plague of Lies doesn’t stick to the basic warrior, mage and ranger classes RPG fans are familiar with. Mages are divided into three distinct classes—Pyromancer, Plague Doctor and Necromancer while warriors can choose between the Warrior, Vanguard and Masochist classes. There are also two dexterity-based classes, Thief and Stalker, as well as two wildcard classes, Vodouist and Tinkerer. Each class offers some intriguing abilities. For instance, the Tinkerer’s Hammertime ability lets you through your two-handed weapon to deal 500% damage. However, you’ll have to fight with your fists for the remainder of the battle. Likewise, the Theif’s Red Herring ability lets players trick enemies into believing they are stunned and allows them to deal 700% damage when next attacked. The game’s creative classes and skills make for a more fun and engaging experience.
Sweet, Sweet Combat
No traditional RPG can do without a sound combat system and luckily, Vendir: Plague of Lies doesn’t disappoint here. The game utilizes a standard turn-based combat system. New abilities become available as you unlock them in the skill tree. Of course, you’ll need to watch your stamina because if it’s too low, you’ll be stuck with your basic attack for a bit. Despite its simplistic nature, the game’s combat is utterly enthralling whether you are battling monsters, rats, or the King’s evil henchmen.
Sizzling Side Quest
One thing this role-playing game isn’t short on is side quests. From battling rats to investigating a suspiciously human-looking piece of talking meat, the game is full of engaging side missions. Not only are most of these quests pretty fun, but many also have multiple endings.
Your character’s personality really shines through the game’s side quest dialogue options. Whether you imagine your character as a golden hero or a cruel mercenary, the various dialogue choices add a level of immersion
Minor In-App Purchase Inconvenience
The only real downside to Vendir: Plague Of Lies are the in-app purchases. Occasionally, you’ll loot a chest after a battle that can only be opened using the game’s premium currency. You’ll be able to occasionally find some premium currency in chests throughout the game. However, unless you shell out some cash you’ll still miss out on most of these premium chests. Of course, missing out on some cool loot is disappointing. However, not making a purchase doesn’t impede your progress and considering Vendir: Plague Of Lies is free, I can’t blame the devs for trying to make some extra cash where they can.
Vendir: Plague of Lies is undoubtedly one of the best mobile RPGs I’ve played in a while. Vendir has everything an RPG fan could want, with engaging quests, unique classes, and a stellar combat system. So, what are you waiting for? Create your character, choose your weapons and fulfill the ancient prophecy.
