Futuristic Myths
From the creators of AFK Arena and Rise of Kingdoms comes a new urban fantasy title, Dislyte, the newest game in the lucrative library belonging to Lilith Games. Futuristic technology exists alongside mystical gods and divine powers.
With a new era dawning on the world, mystery energy waves known as Beacons have changed the world. Monsters began showing up after the Beacons appeared and mystical heroes have risen up to challenge them. Alongside these two factions, a shadowy group seeks to take control of the world for their own nefarious plans. Players serve as observers who control a team of five characters. Players control a team composed of both the protagonists and antagonists of Dislyte, from monsters to heroes.
These characters run the gamut of pop stars, models, street thugs, and lone wolves. Their appearance is fully dependent on mythical beings, the title features winged pop stars bearing the powers of Valkyries, socialites channeling hunting goddesses, alongside anthropomorphic wolves and snakes. Lilith Games’ modernized myths lend the titles a surreal makeover. Think Blade Runner meets The Fifth Element and Jupiter Ascending.
Mythical Heroes
Dislyte offers a refreshing take on the classic trope of summoning mythical heroes. Instead of summoning heroes and gods directly to fight enemies, you employ Espers creatures either blessed by gods or ancient heroes from around the world.
Espers can be divided into five classes and can inhabit four roles. The five classes work as attributes of the Espers. Flow and Shimmer serve as darkness and light attributes respectively, while Inferno and Wind represent fire and air attributes. Controller, Defender, Fighter, and Supporter provide the last four roles. Controllers such as Celine (blessed by the sirens of legend) can bewitch enemies and Jacob (blessed by the serpent Jormungand) can poison enemies. Most of the collectable characters are Fighters like Mona (blessed by Artemis) and Tang Xuan (blessed by Sun Wukong) with the rest falling under the Supporter and Defender roles.
While the characters do have their classes and roles, they can seamlessly fit into either support or main DPS depending on play style. Even healers like Chang Pu (blessed by Yao Ji) can land solid attacks and hold their own against enemies.
Summoning party members via gacha is typical and there’s nothing particularly unique about how Lilith Games went about this. What is unique is the design of these heroes. All of them have features and backstories that mirror whichever divine (or not so divine) being who blessed them. An example of this is Mona. Before she gained the powers of Artemis, she was searching for a way to serve a greater purpose in life. She wanted more than simply being the wealthy daughter of an even wealthier man. She leaves to forge her own path as a hero in the same manner her divine patron did in Greek legend.
There’s another facet of these heroes that Lilith Games truly went above and beyond. Interesting and vivid character designs can be found in most games, but what sets aside Dislyte heroes is the wide variety of representation across body shapes and ethnicities. There are plus-sized heroes who are lauded not only as great beauties, but as amazing heroes in the public eye. Disabled heroes and villains alike feature in the game on equal footing. This representation is a refreshing sight in fantasy games.
Gacha Once Again
Microtransactions tend to rule the day when it comes to gacha games and Dislyte is no different in this aspect. It’s pretty easy to lose interest in a game because of pay-to-win mechanisms. Dislyte isn’t pushy with microtransactions and there are enough freebies in-game to remain strictly free-to-play. Pulling for Espers is a lenient exercise compared to other Gacha games. Tickets for pulling are won with each completed story chapter and gems for buying Gacha tickets are awarded every so often for achievements and successful battles.
Multiplayer and Multibattles
Players can test their teams against other players and earn rewards for these battles. This is pretty common for RPG games. One difference that does set Dislyte apart is the multi-battle function. Players can leave a team auto-fighting in a completed story or trial stage for up to 10 battles and simultaneously battle in a completely different area. Players however will need to ensure they maintain enough stamina for both functions. A caveat mitigated by a stream of stamina packs, constantly gifted via in-game via codes or daily gifts. The stamina requirement and round limit serves as the only thing that keeps this function from fully feeling like an idle game mechanism.
Having a limit based on stamina and rounds helps Dislyte to not feel repetitive or sluggish. Idle games can fall into the trap of not being entertaining because of how easy it is to leave the game running and walk away to do something else. Dislyte isn’t a game that players can leave running for hours mindlessly and then forget about it. This limitation is actually a benefit.
Save Your Friends, Save the World
A world at risk of destruction by some nefarious organization is par for the course. The world is always in danger, especially in RPG games. Dislyte smartly starts off this trope on a smaller scale focusing first on friends and close relationships and then tying it into possible world destruction. The power of friendship (and investing the emotions of players) provides a mighty tool when it comes to creating a riveting storyline. And Lilith Games employs it here with aplomb. All of the protagonists have their own reasons for wanting to save the world and each proves as moving as the last. Even the antagonists come with their own compelling backstories. Unlocking most of these backstories involves heavy character leveling though.
Make Your Own Legend
Visually, Dislyte is an incredibly vivid and almost surreal pop fantasy with its mystical characters and high-stakes battles. The game almost borders the line of being an idle title, but the studio avoids this with their multi-battle round limit and stamina requirement. The colorful gameplay keeps the mind engaged and there’s something new around each corner. Lilith Games definitely is continuing to push the evolution of mobile games with the arrival of Dislyte.
